Voor een winstgevend bedrijf moet je investeren in goede machines. Bovendien moet je die regelmatig vervangen om de winst op peil te houden. Dat begrijpt iedereen. Maar als het om demografie gaat, verliest dit heldere inzicht opeens zijn evidentie. Dan stijgt er opeens een ideologische mist op en ‘gaat het niet aan’ mensen met machines te vergelijken. Geen geboortepolitiek dus.

One of the things most likely to entice controversy in medical care is taking people off life support. Determining when a patient is brain-dead is surprisingly difficult, and doctors and family members need to make very difficult decisions when considering terminating life support. In order to make this job somewhat easier, researchers have recently published a new set of guidelines, which provide experts with a step-by-step process in determining when the adult brain is really dead. The new document does not apply to the infant brain, the people behind it say.

The Council of Ministers of the European Union is about to formally adopt a draft directive for the protection of animals used for scientific purposes, with the aim of strengthening the protection of animals. COMECE welcomes this initiative as there is no doubt that animal protection is an ethical question, particularly for Christians.
